“Winning is not always everything,” adults say, but to me it is. When I heard about the 5th grade Spelling Bee, I was determined to win. I tried my best to get in the bee when we were figuring out who would be in it, and I qualified. So the next day they gave us the list of words. I didn’t study at first because I thought, “This will be easy! I have until January 13!” When it came closer I knew I should have studied earlier. So from then on I studied, studied, and STUDIED. I even studied in the shower!
Then the day finally came. I was very, very nervous. I studied all that day, until the hour came. While my friends and I waited we studied together, waiting for the moment we would step out there and spell. We decided we were bored so we went to watch the younger kids. It was so scary! I ran back, even more nervous then before. Soon it was time, so they lined us up and we were out on the stage, with the first person spelling. It went like that for what seemed like ages. It soon became me and Alaina Ricciardi. I spelled one word correctly and then the championship word, “treasurer,” and I won, with Alaina in second place. “I did it!” I yelled, with my arms in the air. It felt so incredible to win. It taught me that, with a little effort and determination, you can be a winner.
